What Is Dimethyl Silicone Oil and Why Is It Used So Widely?

Published: 2025-12-29

Dimethyl silicone oil, chemically known as polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), is a linear polysiloxane compound that is usually presented as a colorless and transparent liquid, while some high-viscosity grades appear semi-solid. Its molecular structure, (CH3)3SiO[(CH3)2SiO]n-Si(CH3)3, gives it a wide viscosity range, good chemical stability, electrical insulation, water repellency, and lubricity, which is why it is used so widely.

In industrial applications, dimethyl silicone oil is an important functional material. It is used in motors, electrical appliances, and electronic instruments as an insulating medium with good resistance to heat, arc, corona, moisture, and dust. It is also applied in precision instruments, automotive gauges, and aircraft equipment for shock absorption and damping. In molding and casting processes, it acts as a convenient release agent that helps produce clean surfaces and stable demolding results.

In personal care and daily-use products, dimethyl silicone oil helps form a light and breathable protective film on the skin, reducing moisture loss without the heavy feel of traditional oils. In hair-care products, it improves smoothness and gloss by coating the hair surface and reducing friction. It is also commonly used to improve spreadability and finish in cosmetics, skin-care products, and related formulations.

Medical applications rely on its good biocompatibility. Dimethyl silicone oil is non-toxic to the human body and is not easily decomposed by body fluids. It can be used in pharmaceutical and examination-support products such as anti-foaming preparations, and it can also improve the spreadability and skin permeability of certain ointment systems.
